Time Flies When You’re Not Having Fun

Hazel Motes from the movie Wise Blood

It’s Election Day, y’all.

By now you’ve decided how you plan to vote, and you may have already voted. There’s no point in me writing about the election today, or trying to change anybody’s mind one way or the other, or jumping all up on my soapbox to preach at you like a twenty-first century Hazel Motes. You’re going to do what you’re going to do.

But whatever the outcome of this election and whenever we find out what it finally is, remember the third lesson I’ve learned in 2020 — time flies when you’re not having fun.

I can’t believe it’s been four years since I wrote this post the day after the 2016 election. I called it “the most unprecedented election in U.S. history”! Little did I know, right?

And I still feel the same way I did on that day because the last four years for the most part just have not been fun.

Sure I have had happy times over the last few years. Lot’s of them. But politically and socially, these last few years have gone from bad to worse. And it’s so so sad. And disheartening. And discouraging. And infuriating. And depressing as all get out.

But the time really has flown by like time wants to do. And whatever side you’re on and whatever the outcome is, the next four years will pass by in the blink of an eye too … whether we’re having fun or not.

So I think I’ll just let Hazel do today’s preaching for me and leave you with this quote from Wise Blood, “Two things that I just can’t stand — a man that ain’t true and one that mocks what is.”

(This year for #BlogLikeCrazy, I’m talking about 30 lessons I’ve learned in 2020. Read the other entries here).
